On January 15th, 1919, Boston was struck by a disaster unlike any other. A massive tank filled with molasses burst open in the city's North End, unleashing a wave of sticky sweetness that crashed through the streets like a tsunami. The flood, standing at least 25 feet in some areas, was catastrophic. Homes and businesses crumbled under the force of the treacherous goo.
The aftermath was heartbreaking. Twenty-one people lost their lives, and many more were injured. The flood also caused a great deal of destruction to property, leaving a trail of molasses carnage in its wake.
